Meat

LET’S EAT MEAT! Yes, that was in all caps because I’m pretty sure I had spent my whole dinner yelling at my friends. Aside from the noise problem though, Meat was very tasty! Meat recently opened on Whyte, right beside its owner, The Next Act. They focus on Texas style BBQ with a drink menu that is almost the same size as their food menu. The menu was reasonably priced and the portions were definitely sized well. The 4 of us arrived on a Thursday night and even though the place was busy with many people, we were seated within 15 minutes. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful, with blue being it’s main colour.

For my drink, I had an Upson’s classical lemonade in classic lemon ($3.50). The lemonade was not very lemon-y and I found myself wishing I had ordered a classic soda instead.

These were the 4 sauces made in-house that were offered on every table: bourbon, cherry, spicy, and mustard. I only tried the bourbon with my fries and really enjoyed it.

Alright, and now for the food… let’s just say that Meat might be one of my new favourite restaurants in YEG. Our food came out pretty quick too considering how busy it was. I ordered the beef brisket sandwich with garlic fries for $15. BEST FRIES EVER. And what about the sandwich? Pretty delicious even if I wish the brisket had just a bit more flavour to it! So if you plan on trying Meat out, I highly recommend getting one of their sandwiches.
My friends ordered from the actual meat side of the menu: a half rack of BBQ ribs, half a smoked chicken that was apple glazed, and the leg and thigh of a fried chicken. One of my friends also got a bowl of creamed corn and coleslaw for sides, while they all shared garlic fries as well. Their portions were served together on a large metal tray. My friends didn’t enjoy the garlic fries as much as I did but I think I loved it a little too much anyways. All the meat was eaten pretty quickly, but I recall my smoked chicken friend saying that her chicken lacked some flavour.
Overall, is Meat worth checking out? Definitely. But, until they fix their noise problem I wouldn’t recommend going here for a date unless you plan on yelling at them or not speaking to them at all. Also, Meat doesn’t take reservations but seating and service is still quick. I will be back here for sure in the future!
