YYC: Uzu Taiyaki

When I heard about Uzu Taiyaki opening in Calgary earlier this year, I knew I had to go on my next trip! Uzu Taiyaki is a small dessert place located in Chinatown. Their main focus is taiyaki (duh!), which is a Japanese fish-shaped cake dessert. Don’t worry, it doesn’t taste fishy at all. Soft serve ice cream is served in these fishes then you get to choose your toppings. The whole place itself is very Instagrammable and cute but they don’t have any seating area.

There aren’t any already made creations because everything is up to you! You choose a base (taiyaki $7, waffle cone $7, or cup $6), filling inside your taiyaki (red bean or nutella), soft serve ice cream flavour (pandan, ube, thai milk tea, vanilla), then your toppings.

Taiyaki $7

For my taiyaki creation, I decided to go with Thai milk tea (their current feature) and vanilla swirl for my soft serve.  I was slightly disappointed because the Thai milk tea flavour was not strong at all. The vanilla was creamy but tasted like any other soft serve to me, nothing to rave about. I wanted “Instagrammable” toppings so I went with Fruity Pebbles, mini Oreos, and green tea pocky. Tbh, it was a bit overwhelming choosing toppings because there was so many and you don’t want your ice cream to melt. My taiyaki had a red bean filling which also lacked flavour as well. The fish cake part was doughy and fresh, and probably what I enjoyed the most. Overall, it seems like more of a hype and it’s definitely more for the gram than the tastebuds!

Taiyaki is made fresh.

If you don’t want taiyaki, you can choose from a cone or cup.

So many toppings to choose from!

I’m not sure if I would come back here again because it seems like a novelty food item to me. Maybe their other soft serve flavours are tastier though *insert shrugging emoji*. If you’re reading this from Edmonton, it’s not worth the drive!
