Rosso Pizzeria

If patio season was considered an actual season, it would be my favourite. This year’s first patio sitting was at Rosso Pizzeria, which took over Da Capo Cafe last year. Specializing in thin crust pizza, similar to Famoso, Rosso also serves paninis and smaller Italian dishes for appetizers. The interior of the restaurant is a bit tight but it gives off a dark and intimate feel. They also have a patio overlooking the street, which is where I sat since it was a sunny afternoon!

My friend and I went for lunch so we both ordered pizzettas, which are lunch-sized pizzas offered from 11-3 pm. I had the Patata E Pancetta ($9.50) and added a four whistle farm egg for $2. I thought the egg would be baked right in the middle of the pizza but the yolk ended up being spread throughout the whole thing. The egg added a great savoury touch to the pizza and I liked how I could taste the flavor of it with every bite. Along with the egg, the pizza was a combination of Yukon Gold potatoes, pancetta bacon, mozzarella fior de latte, gorgonzola cheese, and fresh rosemary. Together, it created a unique flavor that was different from any other pizza I’ve tried. I would definitely come back to get this pizza especially since it had potatoes!
My friend ordered the Funghi Misti pizzetta ($9.50), which consisted of roasted wild mushrooms, mozzarella fi di latte, taleggio cheese, roasted garlic, fresh parsley, and white truffle oil. Although we both felt that this pizza leaned more towards the bland size, she enjoyed it and would gladly come back to Rosso to try something else.

For dessert, we each got ourselves a small scoop of Kinder gelato. If you like Kinder chocolates then you will love it in gelato form! The size of it was pretty big too, compared to a “small” scoop at other gelato places. If you’re not a fan of gelato, Rosso also offers other desserts such as macarons and tiramisu.
Rosso Pizzeria is reasonably priced considering how their pizza is above average! If you are looking for a new pizza place or if you’re around the Garneau/University area, I would recommend giving Rosso a try.
