Date Night, Edmonton, Westside

Chop Steakhouse & Bar West

Chop Steakhouse & Bar claims to be Edmonton’s best steak dinner restaurant but is it really? I was recently invited in to have a very filling dinner of steak bites, steak, and much more! I dined at their westside location, attached to Sandman Hotel. Their other locations are downtown and southside in Ellerslie. It was my second time visiting a Chop location, with my first being at the southside location last summer. I didn’t have a chance to try their steak though so I was excited to taste what they are known for! Their menu is quite extensive, offering soups & salads, fish, ravioli, steak, prime rib, and chicken to name a few. My friend and I had a hard time picking what to order but our server gave great recommendations.

Disclosure: Although I was invited for a complimentary dinner experience by Chop Steakhouse & Bar West, my review is 100% unbiased and based on my own, sincere experience.

Housemade Lemonade $4.75

To freshen up for our dinner, my friend and I each had a housemade lemonade, topped off with candied lemon peels. Their lemonade was tart and not too sweet like other lemonades where all you taste is sugar. It was spritzy and tasted “weird but good” according to my friend.

Lobster, Scallop, and Gorgonzola Dip with Foccacia Crostini $16.95

For our appetizers, my friend and I tried their two most popular items. The first was a Lobster, Scallop, and Gorgonzola Dip, served with a tower of foccacia crostini. I am a huge fan of dips so I was looking forward to trying this. The dip was a blend of lobster, scallop, blue cheese, and cream cheese with mushrooms. It was delicious and not too heavy. The lobster and scallop taste wasn’t that strong, though. The crostini, which had the right crisp to the edges, went perfectly with the dip.

Steak Bites $16.95

Their most popular appetizer were Steak Bites (what else would you expect from a steak restaurant)? I was a bit hesitant at first on ordering this since I didn’t want a steak overload that night with steak as my main entree. I’m glad we decided to try this item because these steak bites were TASTY. Marinated for 24 hours, these steak bites were tender and full of flavour. They’re served with a golden mustard dip and horseradish aioli. I strayed from the aioli since I personally don’t like horseradish that much. On the other hand, the golden mustard dip was delicious and added a bit of a kick to each steak bite! Both of these appetizers were pretty much meals themselves because my friend and I got a bit full from them. I’d recommend only sharing one appetizer with another person if you’re planning to order an entree, or sharing multiple appetizers as your meal.

Petite Filet Mignon $36.95

If you’ve never been to Chop before, you might find their steak menu to be a little overwhelming. To help us out, our server asked if we preferred our steak tender or marbled. We decided to go with their most tender cut, the filet mignon, in their smaller size (the petite filet). If you prefer your steak marbled, you should order their New York Steak or Rib Eye Steak. The Filet Mignon was cooked perfectly at medium rare. It was thickly cut with the right seasoning to add flavour. It came with thin pieces of deep fried onions and a grilled tomato with pesto. For actual sides, you can choose from mashed potatoes, baked potato, wild rice pilaf, fries, or vegetables. You can upgrade sides to asparagus, sauteed mushrooms, truffle scalloped potatoes, garlic prawns, or king crab and lobster tail. I liked how endless the side options were!

Truffle Scalloped Potatoes $3.95

I decided to substitute the regular side offerings for truffled scalloped potatoes which would be an additional cost. After eating the lobster dip, I found this side to be too rich and heavy for me to finish. There was a thick layer of cheese on top of the potatoes which I feel could be thinned down. The truffle flavour added an odd savoury touch to the potatoes which I didn’t quite enjoy.

Citrus Soy Glazed Salmon $29.95

We also tried their Citrus Soy Glazed Salmon, which is their most popular fish dish. Their other offerings are Maple Bourbon Haddock, Slow Baked Salmon, and Ahi Tuna with Salsa Verde. The salmon is served Asian-style, in a huge bamboo steamer (it’s like giant dim sum!!). Vegetables included cucumber orange salsa and broccoli on the side. The salmon was fresh and melted on the tongue, with a slight tang from the citrus. The wild rice pilaf that accompanied it was “so light it could float in the air”.

Dessert Trio – Caribbean Rum Cake & Fallen Chocolate Souffle Cake $13.75

Dessert Trio – Creme Brulee

Somehow, my friend and I still had room for dessert after all that food! We settled on their dessert trio so that we could try their most popular desserts. The dessert trio had mini-sized versions of their Caribbean Rum Cake, Fallen Chocolate Souffle Cake, and Creme Brûlée. The Caribbean Rum Cake was lightly drenched in Appleton Rum and served with a scoop of vanilla bean gelato on top. It was fluffy and didn’t have a strong rum taste. The Fallen Chocolate Souffle Cake was rich in chocolate and perfect for any chocolate lover. It was also very light! The Creme Brûlée was milkier than usual with a pudding-like texture instead of mousse, as you would expect. My friend and I didn’t enjoy the creme brûlée as much as the other two desserts.

I had a great experience at Chop Steakhouse – food and service wise – and would definitely recommend it for an upscale dinner or sharing plates with a friend, especially since they open late everyday. I wouldn’t say that they’re the best steak restaurant in Edmonton but their steak was up there for sure!
