Mayday Dogs (Closed)

Did you know that you can get hot dogs and milkshakes in the basement of Mercer Warehouse? Mayday Dogs took over Transcend’s old space last year, converting it into a casual hot dog joint. Located on the same floor as Vacancy Hall and Weekly barbershop, Mayday Dogs serves dogs, shakes, and tots to the beats of rappers. That’s pretty much what their menu consists of, plus alcohol. I was long overdue for a visit and finally stopped by last week for lunch. They have a lunch special from 12 pm to 2 pm which my friend and I both got. It includes a hot dog, side order of tots, and a non-alcoholic drink (milkshakes not included). You won’t find your basic hot dog here with ketchup, mustard, and relish. All of their hot dogs have unique toppings, which makes them stand out from other hot dog places.

$12 Lunch Special – C.R.E.A.M. Hot Dog

For myself, I had the C.R.E.A.M. hot dog with crispy sage & garlic tots. The C.R.E.A.M. (named after the only song I know from Wu-Tang Clan), is topped with whipped cream cheese, red pepper relish, everything bagel spice, and scallion. Aside from their veggie dogs, all hot dogs are made from beef. The weiner itself tasted like any other weiner out there. There wasn’t anything special about the weiner but the toppings made the hot dog memorable. I liked how the everything bagel spice added savoury hints as I was eating the hot dog (I originally wrote “eating the dog” but that sounded wrong lmao). Without the lunch special, this hot dog would cost $8. Personally, I don’t think I would pay that much for a hot dog with extravagant toppings. Also, it gets messy to eat so don’t come here on a first date.

I quenched my thirst with a bottle of Fanta Orange. However, I really want to come back to try a milkshake, particularly the Hennessy one. Will Hennessy and ice cream taste good together? I guess Henny-thing is possible…

$12 Lunch Special – Side of Crispy Sage & Garlic Tots

I’ll admit that this was partially the reason why I came here last week. When I saw on their IG that these crispy sage & garlic tots were the feature tots for February, it was my calling to go to Mayday Dogs. I LOVE anything that is a combination of truffle, parmesan, and potatoes. These crispy tots are topped with housemade truffle aioli, fresh grated parmesan cheese from Italian Centre Shop, and Italian flat leaf parsley. These were so good! The only sad part was that I felt that there weren’t enough tots included in the lunch special. Tots by itself cost $5 to $6.50. I am definitely going to try to come back before the end of the month for a full order of these yummy little tots.

$12 Lunch Special – Korean Abdul-Jabbar

My friend tried their Korean inspired hot dog. It was topped with brie, kimchi from Thanh Thanh (love the local outsourcing), Yali pear, gochuyang mayo, scallion, and toasted sesame seed. He thought the weiner was plain as well but enjoyed his hot dog because of the toppings. On a regular basis, this hot dog is $8.

When I say that this is a casual hot dog joint, I’m talking one table in total. If you stop by and the table is taken, guess you’re going to have to enjoy your hot dog on the stairs!

I guess if you need some pre-game fuel before an Oilers game or a concert at Rogers Place, Mayday Dogs is conveniently located right across the street. I don’t love hot dogs enough to pay more than $4 for one but I’ll be back for some garlic tots & Henny shakes!
