Tropika

For some reason, my family always goes to Tropika (south location) for dinner whenever we want to celebrate a special occasion. This time, we were going for my mom’s birthday earlier this week. We’ve been going to this particular location for many years. Tropika is a higher priced Thai and Malaysian restaurant. The inside is clean, modern, and spacious. Their menu has many different dishes to choose from. Some people might find it overwhelming if it’s their first visit. The food is very close to authentic but I’ve found it to be not satisfy as much with every visit.

Virgin Chi Chi $6
A blended tropical mix of pineapple juice, orange juice, and grenadine. I prefer the virgin version over the alcoholic one. The difference between the two is that the alcoholic drink has vodka in it. I try to make mine last throughout the dinner but usually end up finishing it by the time the second item comes out.

Roti Canai $4.50
This Malay bread is my favorite item at Tropika. The fluffy flat-like bread is served with a side of mildly spice curry like sauce. The sauce isn’t thick like curry and is addicting!

Satay Stick $2.30 each
We ordered the beef and chicken satay skewers. There is also an option of lamb. The satay is served with peanut sauce that mainly consists of diced up peanuts. There isn’t a strong peanut flavour though. The beef skewer was very tender and a bit dry. The chicken was somewhat juicy and flavorful.

Fried Hokkien Mee $14
This dish consists of rice vermicelli noodles stir fried with shrimp, vegetables, eggs, chicken, and calamari. It’s very filling and great for sharing amongst a few others. I enjoy eating this dish every time I go to Tropika because they never skimp out on the meat and it’s not bland.

Prawns & Mixed Vegetables $19.50
It was advertised as mixed vegetables on the menu but the dish mainly consisted of onions and some shrimp. It was tossed in a Thai bean sauce which was more on the saltier side.

Daun Pisang Rendang Fish $19.50
Sea bass filet were combined with coconut juice and a tangy spicy sauce. The sauce, called sambal sauce, is similar to a chili paste. The sea bass was fresh and moist. This was definitely a unique Thai twist on your regular sea bass dish.

Hainanese Chicken $18
I find this to be more of a Chinese dish but Tropika still did a great job on it. The juicy and tender chicken served on the side with light chili sauce. It was eaten with Hainanese rice (not pictured).
There’s a reason why my family and I continuously come back to Tropika. It’s very filling and the food is authentic but not greasy, like other Asian places. Tropika is good if you’re going with a few other people for a special occasion dinner.
