Sushi Wasabi

The other night, my friend was craving Japanese food so we went to Sushi Wasabi. It actually felt nice to not pick the food place for once. My friends usually make me pick the place to eat since I’m a “foodie” and it actually gets pretty stressful sometimes!
Sushi Wasabi is located on the southside in a little strip mall area, probably about 2 minutes away from Southgate Mall. It’s a small and intimate restaurant that gives off a warm, cozy feel. Their dinnerware is super cute too. Since it was a Friday night, there was a small wait at the door when we got there but the food came out fast. The waitresses and chefs were super nice, too (we sat at the bar area right in front of where the sushi was made). The food was authentic and everything came out freshly made to order. They have your usual Japanese dishes such as sashami, beef tataki, and maki along with some in house specialities. Sake is also served as well if you’re feeling like a drink.
Green tea for two and beef tataki

To start off, we ordered a plate of beef tataki. Beef tataki is a must-have for me every time I go to a Japanese restaurant. The beef tataki at Sushi Wasabi is actually my new favorite in Edmonton! The portion was huge, seriously it seemed like it was never ending because there was so many pieces. The beef tataki was seared and sliced thinly. Each piece was tender and full of flavor. The ponzu sauce was tarty but wasn’t over powering. I definitely recommend ordering this!! I could’ve honestly eaten this all to myself and leave feeling super satisfied.

Cucumber rolls, sushi cones, & seaweed salad

Surprisingly, I’ve never had a sushi cone before I came here. But then I never actually really liked sushi until 2 years ago.. now I crave it almost everyday! The cones were stuffed with a generous amount of rice, whatever topping you choose, then wrapped in seaweed. I found the seaweed to be kind of tough because every time I bit into the cone, the seaweed wouldn’t come apart. My sushi cone had shrimp tempura, cucumber, avocado, and a mayo-like sauce. I tried my friend’s seaweed salad, which I thought I wouldn’t enjoy but I actually did. It was fresh and the taste and texture reminded me of the jellyfish that’s served at Chinese course dinners with the cold meats.

The cucumber rolls were a refreshing addition to our dinner. The rolls were filled with rice and fresh slices of cucumber.

The shrimp tempura came out piping hot with two dipping sauces on the side, soy sauce and a vinegar-like sauce. The tempura pieces were huge! They were full of batter but you could tell that they were only lightly fried because it wasn’t very oily.
I will definitely be coming back to Sushi Wasabi in the future. I would consider it a hidden sushi gem for Edmonton that’s worth the drive. A very kawaii sushi place for sure!
