Japonais Bistro

Here I am, blogging about food again when I should be studying.
There’s only one place that I’ll go to for sushi and that would be Japonais Bistro. Japonais Bistro is my absolute favorite place in the city for sushi, and it’s the place that actually got me to love it. I used to not like sushi at all until I decided to give Japonais a try 2 years ago, and now I find myself constantly craving it. Defined as a modern Japanese bistro, their menu also serves specialty dishes, bento boxes, sashimi, and tempura amongst other dinner entrees. Many don’t know this but they do have a separate lunch menu that has an offering of ramen, which is more rare to find in Edmonton. The atmosphere of Japonais Bistro is quaint and intimate, with a modernly designed and spacious interior. I’ve heard Japonais being described as overpriced for sushi but to clear things up, I’d say that you definitely get your money’s worth.
Golden Crunch (left) x Bakudan (right)

The Golden Crunch rolls ($10.95) were a combination of fresh salmon, spicy mayo, tobiko, avocado, and tempura crumbs. Drizzled with sweet soy sauce, the rolls were nice and flavorful. The Bakudan rolls ($8.95) consisted of spicy tuna and tempura bits. Compared to the rest of the rolls we ordered, the Bakudan was a bit more bland and not as spicy as we expected it to be.

TNT

The TNT rolls ($13.95) are one of the most popular orders at Japonais Bistro and I can see why. We ended up ordering another plate of these after we finished the first one! These rolls are composed of crab and avocado then topped with shrimp tempura, tobiko, sesame seeds, and then drizzled with TNT sauce. Like many of the items at Japonais, the TNT rolls were artfully plated. Each roll was bursting with flavor and full of deliciousness!

Double Double

The Double Double rolls ($13.95) are my personal favorite at Japonais. I’m pretty sure that I’ve ordered them every time I went here. They’re shrimp tempura rolls that are topped with cooked shrimp, avocado, sweet sauce, and sesame seeds. If you love shrimp like me then you will love these rolls! My mouth is watering as I write this blog post right now lol. And excuse the bad quality of this photo, my DSLR camera sucks in low lighting! I’m gonna invest in a new lens soon so prepare for some higher quality pictures.
Matcha Creme Brulee

Tiramisu Parfait

For dessert, we shared a matcha creme brulee ($7.95) and tiramisu parfait ($8.95). The matcha creme brulee was creamy and packed with green tea flavour, as always. This dessert never disappoints me! The tiramisu parfait was my first time trying it. I expected more tiramisu from it but I think that I mostly just tasted chocolate ice cream along with cereal at the bottom. The cereal was an odd addition but didn’t taste that weird surprisingly. I don’t think I would order the “tiramisu” again though.
Japonais Bistro will always be my go-to place for sushi. Its attentive service, modern fine dining atmosphere, and outstanding sushi always leave me satisfied after every meal. I recommend giving this place a try if you haven’t already because it’s worth it.
