5th St. Food Hall

Edmonton’s first food hall has opened up!

5th St. Food Hall by Just Cook Kitchens is the new go-to hub for local food businesses. Here, you can find 4 different food concepts operating under 1 roof: Backstairs Burger, HOM, Seitans, and Three Foodies. Amongst that is a small marketplace with goodies from local vendors, a bar to order locally crafted drinks from, and a dining area to enjoy your food in. The food hall is located downtown, near MacEwan University and Rogers Place. Unlike other downtown eateries, free parking is available on the lot just south of the building.

The brain behind the food hall is Just Cook Kitchens, founded by Jennifer Keith and Luke Butterworth. Their shared love for food and entrepreneurship led to the creation of the food hall.

I had visited the food hall during their VIP event last weekend. I was able to preview the space and sample the food from all 4 food concepts. I enjoyed how each food concept was different from one another, creating variety in the options available.

Food Concept: HOM

HOM means “fragrant”, which describes their dishes perfectly. You may have heard of them as they used to do pop-up dinners in their backyard. They specialize in South East Asian inspired dishes, such as Rendang (Malaysian Dry Curry Beef) and Nam Khao (Lao Crispy Rice Salad).

Food Concept: Three Foodies

Three Foodies was created by two Red Seal chefs and a food enthusiast, their goal is to give classic foods a unique twist. At the event, I had the chance to try out their cheeseburger panini, pulled pork slider, and brownie.

Food Concept: Seitans

If you’re looking for plant-based food, Seitans would be the concept for you. Their items include fried oysters, sliders, and pizza bites – all plant-based.

Food Concept: Backstairs Burger

Familiar to the Edmonton food scene, Backstairs Burger had started off as underground pop-ups. Now, you can find their burgers and crack fries full-time at the food hall.

Don’t forget to shop from the small marketplace. You can find items from local businesses such as Caramunchies, Smart Sweets, Rogue Wave Coffee, and more.

Upon leaving the event, we received goody bags and Bad Coffee. I loved the design on these cans!

I’m happy to see that the food scene in the city is evolving with new ideas. In the future, they’re hoping to have pop-ups at the food hall. Check them out if you’re into unique food experiences!
