“For us, food comes first… We work with visionaries, dreamers, farmers and chefs. People who pride themselves on quality and flavour, not just margins and profits.” – Uproot Food Collective

Uproot Food Collective consists of different local food businesses in Edmonton. All these businesses offer their products through Uproot’s online store and downtown storefront location. The main businesses are Honest Dumplings, South Island Pie, and Natural Kitchen Delights (Uproot Food Collective is their umbrella brand). Other businesses you can purchase from are Caramunchies, Irving’s Farm Fresh, Little Bear Gelato, Pierogie, Steve and Dan’s Fresh BC Fruit, and more. The online store offers deliveries throughout Alberta. They deliver daily around Edmonton, Sherwood Park, and St. Alberta, weekly to Calgary, and bi-weekly/monthly to Grand Prairie, Fort Mcmurry, Red Deer, and Lethbridge. If you’re not located in Edmonton but still within Alberta, you’re still able to try one of these quality local businesses!

I’ve seen South Island Pie at a farmer’s market before but didn’t have a chance to try it until now. They specialize in traditional New Zealand meat pies. The owner/piemaker is actually from New Zealand so you can bet these pies are authentic! They come frozen but are easy to prepare – just pop them in the oven for 40 minutes then enjoy. The pie was thick and flaky! It was delicious and tasted freshly made, not frozen. I tried the bacon, egg, & cheese filling. There are other fillings with steak, chicken, or mince.

Honest Dumplings is another business that I’ve heard of but haven’t tried until now. I would say these are more fusion-flavoured dumplings and a bit different from your usual Asian dumplings. They were easy and quick to prepare as well. I tried the Maple Pork Belly flavour which I found to be very unique. It tasted great with their Spicy Sauce, which had a mild kick to it. Other interesting flavours they have are Ginger Beef Bites, Truffle Oil Mushroom, and General Tso’s Chicken.

You can find Laker Coffee Co at Uproot, which is a small batch roaster in Edmonton. They also operate a mobile coffee trailer. If you’re looking for high-end and hand-picked coffee, Laker Coffee Co is the answer.

I’ve tried Natural Kitchen Delights’ chocolate recently at U of A Botanic’s Picnic Experience. I was happy that I would be able to have it again! It’s raw dark chocolate made in Alberta with no additives. Honestly, I think it’s some of the best dark chocolate I’ve ever had. There are a lot of different flavours too.

Natural Kitchen Delight’s chocolate is very soft and the texture reminds me of a moist cake!

For those with a sweet tooth, I recommend adding a pint of Little Bear Gelato to your order. The name of the business is inspired by the owner’s 2-year-old son. The owner perfected his gelato from years of experience in France.
