HUMA (Closed)

If you’ve driven down 99 Street before, chances are you’ve probably passed HUMA without even noticing it. It’s one of those restaurants where you don’t know it’s there until you actually notice it one day. HUMA is an authentic Mexican restaurant that my boyfriend always raves about so we finally went there for lunch. Their menu is quite vast – there’s more than just tacos (obviously) and they have certain dishes that are only available on particular days of the week.

Guacamole + Homemade Tortilla Chips $6

We started off our meal with an order of Guacamole + Homemade Tortilla Chips. Pretty tasty, the guacamole was made just right. It wasn’t too mushy or too chunky.

Chicarron De Queso $16

The Chicarron De Queso was a giant cheese crisp. Yes, a GIANT cheese crisp. It was honestly the highlight of my meal. I feel like next time I come here, I’d order this as my main. If you do want to share though, it can probably be split between 2 to 3 people. The cheese crisp was served with Pico de Gallo and Guacamole.

Pastor Tacos $18

We specifically came here on a Saturday to order the Pastor Tacos. These tacos are only available on Saturdays and Sundays. With 4 tacos per order, they have chili-marinated pork with onions, cilantro, and roasted pineapple. The pork was tender and the sizing of the tacos were generous. A bit too generous I’d say. This might be an unpopular opinion but I don’t like having too much meat in my tacos. I found the tacos here to have more filling than other places I’ve tried (Calle Mexico and Tres Carnales). Overall, I still enjoyed the Pastor tacos though.

Tacos Arabes ($4.75)

Tacos Arabes are very popular in Puebla. I’d say it’s like a bigger version of your average taco except it’s half wrapped like a burrito. I personally did not enjoy these as much as I enjoyed the normal tacos. These ones were stuffed with marinated pork and served with chipotle sauce. I found that the pork was dry and the taco overall lacked flavour.

Overall, I enjoyed my meal here at HUMA. It did feel authentic to me but I wouldn’t say it was the best Mexican food I’ve ever had (sorry boyfriend). We certainly did over order as the portion sizes were quite filling!
