Cafe Besos (Closed)

Cafe Besos is a fairly new addition to Whyte Ave. It’s been open for a few weeks, cojoined with Lyon Restaurant which took over Bottega 104’s space. Cafe Besos presents itself as a Mediterranean coffee and wine bar that also serves food. My friend and I decided to come here this past weekend for brunch.

A clean & simple interior

Matcha Latte $5.45

We each ordered a matcha latte. This matcha latte was one of the frothiest ones I’ve ever had, in a good way. It was also a bit sweeter than other matcha lattes I’ve tried before. The secret ingredient? Cane sugar. If you don’t feel like having a cafe drink, they do offer an extensive wine menu.

 Quiche Lorraine $12

Just like the cafe interior, the lunch menu was quite simple with only 7 items. I chose to go with the Quiche Lorraine, which is served with a side salad. The filling was thick and fluffy, with gruyere cheese, boar bacon, and onion confit. It wasn’t overly rich and cheesy. My only comment was that I wish the crust had been a bit crispier. The quiche came with a frise-arugula salad that had a lemon-garlic vinaigrette.

Pomme Frites w/ Truffle Aioli $3

When I saw that I could add-on Pomme Frites to my meal for only $3, I knew I had to do it. You can’t go wrong with fries, especially when it’s served with truffle aioli. I felt like the aioli could’ve been stronger.

Avocado Toast $10

My friend chose to go with the Millenial favourite: Avocado Toast. Here, it’s topped with grape tomatoes, pickled radish, and jalapenos. She liked how different it was from the normal avocado toast. The crunch from the jalapenos added a nice texture.

Cafe Besos seems like a quaint place to grab a drink (coffee or alcohol) or to get some work done. It was quiet during my visit here but hopefully it will pick up!
