Awake Coffeehouse

Awake Coffeehouse is a cute cafe located by Twin Brooks in southside Edmonton. It is actually part of a pharmacy, a very hip and modern one that is. The place is very easy to find (especially for someone who is directionally challenged aka me) as it is located right off the 111 Street exit on the Henday. Awake sells cafe drinks, baked goods, and on the weekends they offer bubble waffles, which was the main reason for my visit. It’s a good place to study, do work, or catch up with a friend because there is ample seating available. They also have a cute aesthetic for Insta photos, minus the medicine in the background depending on where you are sitting!

Disclosure: Although I was invited for a complimentary meal by Awake Coffeehouse, my review is 100% unbiased and based on my own, sincere experience.

Interior – loved the mint green touches!

Matcha Latte & London Fog ($5 each)

It was actually my second visit here. My first visit was a year ago when I tried the chai latte, which I wasn’t a fan of. This time, I saw that they had matcha lattes so that was my choice. I really enjoyed it because it was delicious and creamy! They used matcha that was imported from Japan. It was rich in flavour but it wasn’t overly bitter. My friend got the London Fog which she said was creamy and frothy, but nothing special.

Cookies & Cream Bubble Waffle $8.50

Every weekend (Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays), Awake serves freshly made bubble waffles. They have a variety of combinations to choose from, both savoury and sweet. For savoury waffles, there is BEG (bacon, egg, guacamole) and spicy chicken. For sweet waffles, there is cookies & cream, pina colada, and mint strawberry. If you are feeling simple then you can choose to go for a plain waffle served with berry compote and choco-hazelnut sauce. My friend and I decided to share a cookies & cream bubble waffle when we came here. It was filled with a good amount of vanilla cream custard and Oreo pieces.  The bubble waffle itself was made with egg and was very fluffy. I’m usually not a fan of custard but I liked the one that was in the waffle. It wasn’t overly sweet and since it was more of a cream, it wasn’t too heavy. The vanilla custard cream tasted really good with the Oreo! Both of us agreed that we really liked it.

BEG Bubble Waffle $9.50

I also had one of their savoury waffles all to myself because I was feeling a little hungry. I tried their BEG bubble waffle which was stuffed with bacon, egg, and guacamole. It was also made with a homemade tomato sauce that tasted like pizza sauce and paired well with everything else. Everything about this waffle was delicious! After eating this waffle and half of the cookies & cream one, I was full for sure.

If I lived closer to Awake Coffeehouse, I would probably go there more often. It’s a great cafe to go to with a nice atmosphere and delicious bubble waffles. Their drinks seem to be a hit or miss but I recommend trying one of the matcha lattes if you stop by.
