OEB Breakfast Co.

OEB has finally opened up in Edmonton!

I was super excited when I heard that OEB was opening up in Edmonton. I’ve never had the chance to go in Calgary because there’s always a long wait whenever I’m there or I’m in the city past opening time. After months of waiting, I finally got my first taste of OEB last weekend! They are officially open in Edmonton now, serving brunch 7 days a week (hours are posted at the end of this post).  OEB stands for Over Easy Breakfast. Originated from Calgary in 2009, they have expanded to Edmonton and opened up in the Kelly Ramsey. Their second location is set to open next year, taking over North 53’s former space on 124 Street. OEB’s menu focuses on items that simply can’t be made at home. They believe in using locally-sourced ingredients from carefully selected ranchers, farmers, and entrepreneurs. Their food is meant to fill the soul and that’s exactly what it did to me (and my stomach). The interior is super cute too (eggs everywhere) and the service was friendly and warming.

Disclosure: Although I was invited to a VIP opening by OEB, my review is 100% unbiased and based on my own, sincere experience.

Canadian Eh! Benny $18

At their VIP opening, each table was given a card with 4 dishes to choose from. Every table had a different card because it allowed the kitchen the experience to make various items. We were also able to order off the menu, which would be charged.

I chose to go with one of their eggs benny, the Canadian Eh!. Served on a butter croissant, each half was topped with a slice of Canadian back bacon and an egg. It also came with your choice of: potatoes cooked in organic duck fat, wild arugula, or olive oil red bliss potatoes. A small plate of fresh fruit also accompanied the meal. You could either choose from dark maple syrup or brown butter Hollandaise sauce so I decided to try something new and go with the syrup. I wish I went with their Hollandaise instead (which is amazing) because the syrup tasted odd with the bacon and poached egg. I ended up asking for a side of Hollandaise after and it gave life to the dish. The portion seemed small though, especially the butter croissant. They used a mini butter croissant but the dish would’ve been better suited with a regular sized croissant. Lastly, the potatoes were amazing. They were so well-seasoned that I didn’t need any ketchup with it. Overall, this particular benny didn’t stand out to me but I would love to try their other bennys.

Chasing Chickens Breakfast Poutine $17

My friend tried one of their breakfast poutines, which I kept stealing bites of. He got their Chasing Chickens, a combination of herbed potatoes, pulled chicken, Saint Cyrille cheese curds, brown butter Hollandaise sauce, and poached eggs. Secretly, I wish I had ordered a breakfast poutine as well. He enjoyed it a lot, particularly the Hollandaise and poached eggs. His eggs were perfect, just like in my benny. OEB uses omega-3 enriched eggs from their own farm of free-run chickens. My friend noted that he couldn’t really tasted the chicken because the eggs and Hollandaise dominated the flavours. He also wished that there was more texture to his bowl so that he “wasn’t just eating wedges”. Personally, I feel like you can never have too many potato wedges!

Hot Chocolate $4

Their hot chocolate is made in-house from a hot chocolate mix and steamed milk. I would’ve preferred it if the chocolate flavour was a bit stronger.

Gold Digga Breakfast Poutine $20

I came back to OEB for a second time a few days after my first visit. This time, I knew I had to order one of their breakfast poutines. I decided on Gold Digga, a combination of herbed potatoes, Quebec cheese curds, Berkshire roast pork, black truffle (YAS!), Hollandaise, and poached eggs. This poutine was everything that I had dreamed of. It had SO MUCH shaved black truffle, they definitely did not skimp on it at all. The roasted pork pieces were huge and succulent. Their Hollandaise sauce is unreal and brought the whole dish together. My friends had the Hog & Scallops Breakfast Poutine, which is their most popular poutine and tends to sell out. They loved it as well. I highly getting a breakfast poutine from here! There are 10 breakfast poutine dishes in total, one even has a lobster scramble which is probably what I’ll be ordering next time. If you don’t want only potatoes in your poutine, you can ask for half potatoes and half spinach at no charge.

I’m really glad that I don’t have to drive 3 hours if I want to go to OEB. I’m sure other Edmontonians feel the same way, too! There is a long wait on weekends but if you download Yelp’s app, you can join their waitlist from home/work/wherever you are. OEB’s brunch is priced a little more than other spots in the city but you definitely get your money’s worth. It has become my new go-to spot for brunch!
