Downtown, Edmonton, Sweet Tooth

Cacao 70 (Closed)

The most aesthetically pleasing dessert cafe has just opened up in downtown Edmonton! Straight out of a perfect Instagram shot, Cacao 70 has brought its delicious dessert creations here. If you haven’t heard of Cacao 70, it’s a dessert chain based in Montreal that has expanded throughout Canada. Cacao 70 is well known for their decadent chocolate, such as fondues and hot chocolates. Since the chain has different concepts, the location I visited was their Sweet House concept which serves all-day brunch, dessert, and chocolate drinks. The dessert menu consists of waffles, fondues, crepes, dessert pizzas, and sharing plates. You can also get their signature dipped ice cream and chocolate drinks, available on the go.

How pretty is their interior?!

This is their first Edmonton location, which is in the back of the Edmonton Tower in the Ice District. Two more locations are planned – one in West Edmonton Mall and the other on Whyte Ave.

Order, pay, sit, then eat!

Matcha Chocolate Fondue $13.95

My friend and I tried out their fondue and a classic waffle combo. Each of their fondue comes in two sizes and there are so many flavours to choose from! We settled on the smaller size of their matcha chocolate fondue, which was perfect for 2 people. Their other flavours are classic, black & white, triple, coffee, peanut butter, and Earl Grey. The fondue was served with fresh fruit, chocolate brownie pieces, and waffle bites. The matcha fondue itself was creamy and definitely did not lack the matcha taste. It wasn’t bitter due to the balance of the chocolate but it was soooo good. I would definitely recommend trying this if you like matcha! They also have a classic waffle with their matcha chocolate called the Catcha Matcha which I’m probably gonna try on my next visit.

Matcha chocolate goodness. Btw, the fondue doesn’t fill up the whole cup but only the first quarter!

The Blackjack $14.50

Their classic waffle combo definitely did not look like your average dessert waffle. We tried The Blackjack which had a Cacao 70 waffle hidden at the bottom, topped with black sesame chocolate, cheesecake creme brulee, soft serve ice cream, whipped cream, sesame seeds, and a waffle cone. Their Cacao 70 waffle had a slight crisp to it, which paired perfectly with the sesame chocolate and ice cream. I tried to get a bit of everything in each bite. Honestly, I couldn’t tell where the cheesecake creme brulee was in this but I think I tasted it?? My friend and I both enjoyed The Blackjack even though it looked overwhelming at first!

Cacao 70 satisfied my sweet tooth for sure, maybe a little too much. The desserts got too sweet towards the end and we didn’t end up finishing The Blackjack. It would probably be best to share only one dessert with another person if your dessert game isn’t that strong!

Second Visit

Grilled Marshmallows $15

I came back again for another visit and shared their Grilled Marshmallows with my friend. It’s basically a DIY s’mores and even comes with a mini campfire-like grill! It includes marshmallows, bananas drizzled in toffee, graham crackers, whipped cream, peanut butter sauce, and chocolate sauce. Although it was fun roasting my own marshmallows (which I completely sucked at), I wouldn’t say it was worth the price. I mean, you could probably buy your own s’mores kit at the grocery stores and roast it at home for $5 right? My friend and I sat by the table and since there was an event happening at Rogers Place that evening, many passerbys stared at our food in awe!
