It’ Dog

The newest Korean fried chicken joint in town has opened, but this time it’s accompanied by hot dogs. Located right beside the newly renovated Remedy Cafe on 109 street, It’ Dog is a smaller sized restaurant that replaced Badass Jack’s. Since it’s such a close location to the University campus, majority of the customers were students when I came. It’s also a good place for the party crowd or night owls since they open till 3 am on Fridays and Saturdays. The food and service were pretty quick, and you can choose to eat your food at one of the few tables or have it to go. Pricing wise, it was inexpensive because I guess they were considerate of students and the debts we have to pay!

Their menu focuses on three main items: hot dogs, fried chicken, and poutine. The Korean style hot dogs are fully loaded with toppings such as bulgogi, fried chicken, mac n cheese, chili, and a lot more to choose from! Some of the combinations are a bit more on the wild side for those who like to try different things. If you’re a spicy person, the ‘hardcore dog’ is calling your name. Some of the hot dogs have an Asian twist on them, such as the ‘bulgogi dog’, ‘kimchi pork’ dog, ‘it dog’, and ‘peach shrimp’ dog. Their hot dogs are all served on pretzel buns with all beef sausages. Customers have the option to customize their own hot dog though, with plain hot dogs being the main base.
I’m sure many people are familiar with Korean Fried Chicken (KFC). It’ Dog offers them in half orders (5 pieces) and full orders (10 pieces). There are 4 different types of KFC to choose from and there is also an option to make the fried chicken a combo with fries for an extra price. The poutine comes in 2 sizes, with 6 toppings available along with the ‘original’ poutine. For those who want to stick to plain fries as their side, that can be ordered for $3.
For myself, the ‘truffle mac & cheese’ dog ($9) caught my eye. The 100% beef grilled sausage was served on a pretzel bun then topped with mac and cheese, bacon bits, parmesan cheese, mozzarella cheese, and jalapenos. If it wasn’t for the toppings, the hot dog wouldn’t have been outstanding because the sausage was plain and unsatisfying, sadly. I enjoyed how they used pretzel buns which put a unique twist on regular buns. I wish that the bun didn’t keep sticking to my teeth, though, because this took a bit of the enjoyment away when I was eating! If you decide to try this hot dog out, I suggest adding a sauce to it because the hot dog was served with mozzarella cheese in replacement of a sauce. The only sauce was drizzled into the mac and cheese itself, which was creamy and created a nice texture to the sausage. Overall, the ‘truffle mac & cheese’ dog filled me up and was quite the comfort food.

Both of my friends tried their signature hot dog, the ‘it dog’ ($9). It was topped with a combination of bulgogi, tempura shrimp, mushroom, caramelized onion, mozzarella cheese, green onion, and sweet wasabi mayo. Quite a combination – or should I say heart attack! It was a mixture of many different flavours but ended up coming together to create one tasty hot dog. My friends enjoyed their hot dogs and would recommend the ‘it dog’ to anyone stopping by.
The verdict on ‘It Dog’? I understand that since they just opened, they may have a few kinks to work out (barely noticeable kinks though). If you’re craving a Korean style hot dog or fried chicken anytime soon, definitely make a stop at It’ Dog. It’s worth a try for sure!
