Edmonton, Northside

East (Closed)

It’s called East but it’s located north. East is a Malaysian restaurant that mixes Chinese cuisine into it, as well. Owned by the same team that operate Lazia and The Wildflower Grill, the setting is modern and clean. The walls are filled with artistic oriental pieces, standing out against the green-colored booths to carry out a vivid and colorful atmosphere. Their menu is filled with many pictures to showcase their creative Asian dishes, consisting of an even mix of Malaysian and Chinese cultural foods. It wasn’t my first time at East but I still looked forward to the dining experience that night.

The milk tea was heavenly and creamy. One of my favorite drinks to order at an Asian restaurant, it was finished before the food even came!

Roti Canai was our first appetizer dish of the night. Huge slices of warm and slightly crispy deep fried bread were dipped into a spicy and flavourful sauce! This is a must-try if you plan to check out East.

The chicken satay came in an order of 6 sticks with a bowl of peanut satay sauce on the side. The chicken was very juicy and I really enjoyed how the texture had a bit of a crisp to it. It was very compatible with the fresh peanut sauce it was served with.

The Hainanese chicken was plated very nicely and although the chicken was tender, it leaned towards the drier side. The ginger sauce served on the side added the flavour that it needed. It was a filling dish for one!

The Silver Needle Noodles was a very unique dish served in a hot metal bowl that kept it warm. Thick clear colored noodles were in a soup-like base that was made of minced pork, mushrooms, fried shallots, and dark soya. There was also a floating egg in the centre of it all. This dish would probably serve two people.
East is one of the rare restaurants in the northside of Edmonton that is actually tasty, or not a chain restaurant!
