Tavern 1903 (Closed)
August 26, 2014
Tavern 1903 is situated in the heart of downtown in the Alberta Hotel. The rustic feel of the restaurant gives off a cozy and inviting atmosphere, on the upscale side with a wide cocktail bar. Unfortunately, I did not try any of their cocktails but they have a large and unique menu to choose from. There was 4 of us so we decided to order a few plates and share, for dinner.

- KFC: Korean fried cauliflower topped with sesame seeds and scallions. They were nicely fried without any grease and had a soft, crunchy texture to them. Definitely my favourite item of the night!
- Truffled Mac and Cheese: We were disappointed to see that the mac and cheese used penne noodles instead of regular macaroni noodles. It was more of a pasta dish because it lacked the cheesiness and creaminess of mac and cheese. The “mac and cheese” featured smoked ham hock and baby lobster pieces.
- Chicken and Waffles: Buttermilk breaded chicken with housemade waffles, topped with chipotle-mayo syrup. They were a bit on the spicy side because of the spices added to it. Chicken and waffles are usually a unique menu item but it wasn’t anything special at Tavern 1903, even though there was a twist on the syrup.
- Duck Confit Tacos: These tacos were a bit spicy as well. Using soft shell tacos, they were filled with a combination of duck meat, pickled carrots, cucumber, sour cream, siracha, and sour cherries. These tacos were quite good and interesting!
Dessert:
- Liquid Cheesecake Parfait: The cheesecake consisted of Saskatoon strawberry compote and salted Shortbread crumble.
- Maple Bacon Cider Donuts: I was very excited to try these mini donuts! They were a bit sweet but still delicious nonetheless.
Overall, our dinner was a bit overpriced and we didn’t get filled up from it. The food was good though and I can see why Tavern has been “talk of the town” for months. I wanted to like it a lot more but I guess a second try might be in the works one day.
